Guidelines for the Integration of AdUp Advertising Materials

Find out which guidelines apply to the integration of AdUp advertising material and how to place ads on your website in a compliant, user-friendly and high-performing way.

Overview

With AdUp, you can flexibly integrate advertisements into your website design. The aim is to harmoniously integrate ads into the page layout while simultaneously creating a positive user experience.

To ensure that both publishers and advertisers benefit from a high advertising quality in the long term, several binding guidelines apply to the integration of AdUp advertising material.

Clearly label advertisements

Advertisements must be recognisable as advertising to visitors at all times.

Various labels are available to you in the publisher frontend for labelling, for example:

  • AdUp Ads

  • Advertisements

Please use only the labels available in the system.

Custom headings intended to encourage users to click on ads are not permitted.

Examples:

❌ Insider tip
❌ Further links
❌ Highly recommended
❌ Discover now

Text ads in content

If text-only ads are displayed within editorial content, they must contain an ad text.

This ensures that it remains recognisable to users as advertising at all times.

Permissible content

AdUp ads may only be integrated on websites whose content complies with our guidelines.

Websites with content related to the following are not permitted:

  • pornographic or sexual content

  • glorification of violence

  • hate speech or discrimination

  • racist or extremist content

  • illegal activities

  • hacking or cracking

  • illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia

  • prescription medicines (without corresponding approval)

  • weapons or ammunition

  • product counterfeits or plagiarism

  • other illegal content

These specifications also apply to linked content.

Visitor sources

AdUp ads must not be integrated on websites that generate visitors via pay-to-click programmes or comparable artificial traffic sources.

The visitors to your website should come from legitimate and organic sources.

Permitted placements

You can flexibly place ads within your website and test different positions.

The integration of AdUp advertising material in the following is not permitted:

  • software applications

  • desktop programs

  • browser extensions

  • emails

Exception:

Newsletter ads may be integrated within email newsletters.

Clicks on your own ads

Never click on your own ads.

Likewise, it is not permitted to:

  • encourage other people to click

  • artificially generate clicks

  • technically manipulate impressions or clicks

  • use automated clicks or bots

Violations can lead to the suspension of your publisher account.

Number of ads

Up to four ad units can be integrated per page.

Within an ad unit, a maximum of ten ads can be displayed.

Make sure to place ads sensibly in the page layout and not to overlap the actual content.

Best Practices

Integrate ads naturally

Adapt colours and design to your website layout without disguising the advertising character.

Choose user-friendly placements

Position ads where they are highly visible without disrupting the flow of reading or the usability of the website.

Quality over quantity

Fewer, but well-placed ads often achieve better results than a large number of advertising spaces.

Regularly review guidelines

Regularly check your website for changes that could affect compliance with the publisher guidelines.

Common Sources of Error

Misleading headings

Do not use custom-written labels that are intended to entice users to click on ads.

Prohibited content

Advertisements must not be delivered on pages with content that is illegal or violates the guidelines.

Invalid clicks

Your own clicks or artificially generated interactions distort performance and are not permitted.

Too many ads

Even though up to four ad units are permitted, the ad density should always stand in a balanced relationship to the actual page content.
